School Initiatives: Work Placements

Within the activities of the Third Mission is the Institute's commitment to engage in strong collaborations with schools, as part of the “Work Placement” initiative promoted by Miurincluded in the training offer of all second-grade secondary school education as an integral part of the education trajectory (Law 13th July 2015, n. 107, art. 1, c. 33-43). The routes created by the IBAM in collaboration with the educational institutes set out to convey to younger generations the purpose of scientific research, showing the research that an institute has been carrying out on cultural heritage for years; how it uses the most innovative technologies applied to cultural assets and above all what professional skills are needed to carry out this research today, so as to orient students to a correct choice of future studies. Students have the opportunity to learn the kaleidoscope of multidisciplinary skills in the cultural heritage sector, ranging from archeology, architecture, physics, chemistry, geology, information technology, engineering and graphics to communication. The expected results from the trajectories envisaged are to:

1. Increase education in cultural heritage;

2. strengthen students' sense of belonging to their own territory;

3. increase critical analysis, observance, and team play, allowing students to acquire new information, becoming competent users of digital environments and tools, as well as producers, creators, and designers of cultural content.

“Ancient Images: A technological look at the past” Project


Period: October 2016 - June 2017 (72 total hours, 50 of which performed in IBAM)

Project desciption: Given the close link between the schools and the territory of Catania, in 2016 IBAM devised a path that saw the students involved in the "Enhancement and fruition of the Roman amphitheatre of Catania" project through the realization of two digital products for the dissemination and enhancement of cultural goods: a paper / digital guide to the Roman amphitheater of Catania entitled A tempora exploranda. Guide to Catania's Roman amphitheater for children" for children aged 6 to 10 years old and 8 narrative video clips of the 8 points of interest (POI) related to the inaccessible sectors of the amphitheater, inserted within the virtual tour realized within the project.

Students, alongside industry experts, become "new interpreters" of Catania's cultural heritage, able to promote and enhance, in society, especially among peers, knowledge of the cultural heritage of their city by first learning to recognize in the present signs of the past, often hidden by the many transformations of the urban fabric.


  Paths of enhancement and communication of cultural heritage for greater social inclusion

Project description: The project intends to initiate a direct involvement of students in the activities of enhancing, safeguarding and communicating cultural heritage conducted by the Institute, leveraging multidisciplinarity for a proper knowledge of cultural assets, also through the use of the most up-to-date IT technologies. Through the creation of graphic, photographic and digital content as well as participation in excavation, survey and data acquisition, conducted alongside experts in the field, it will be possible to acquire information and awareness of professions related to cultural heritage, objectives and purposes of doing scientific research today. Focusing on the experiential aspect and learning-by-doing approach, the project is structured in non-formal didactic lessons, pre-requisites for subsequent laboratory activities, with a specific focus on:

  1. knowledge of disciplines such as geophysics and archeometry, as well as survey methods such as architectural relief by laser scanners and their usefulness for the recording, preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage;
  2. knowledge in the field of Information Communication Technologies (ICT) and strategies for the promotion and dissemination of cultural heritage.

In particular, involvement in the creation of multimedia products, such as the virtual tour of the Roman amphitheater in Catania, provides the opportunity for the use of particular instruments (camera, stand, flash, floodlights, etc.) as well as participation in some archaeological excavation days at the Parco Archeologico della Valle dell'Aci allows you to observe the dynamics of an archaeological excavation, taking part in some phases such as the washing and marking of the finds found with the use of specific instrumentation (brushes, vernidas, pens).
