MenSALe - Mense storiche ed artistiche lucane (Historic and artistic dining in Lucania)

Purpose: every time one cooks, one is manipulating products of nature. This manipulation may be defined as cultural, as it is an action full of significance, purpose and symbols of identity. Eating habits distinguish not only social classes, but also different religions, different ethnicities or, simply, belonging to or coming from a particular place. Therefore, food equals culture.

While in the past, one would generally have found on a dinner table only dishes of local produce, with products from further afield gracing only the tables of the richest, today we find food from all sorts of cultures being used together in harmony.

The project MenSALe of IBAM is based on the concept of food as nutrition for both body and soul. The European partner in this project is the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation.

In detail, the activities carried out by the CNR will be divided into the following phases: (1) a census of the caves in the area of the Cinti and recording of the dimensions, structural and functional characteristics of each, together with their internal architectural and art-historical features; (2) archival research and analysis of the historical documentation concerning the areas in which the Cinti are found; (3) multi-period photointerpretation of the relevant zone, aimed at assessing the stability (or otherwise) of the slopes into which the caves are cut; (4) surveys, control and verification of incipient instability in the external (entrances and lateral footpaths) and internal aspects of the Cinti; (5) georeferencing of the data obtained and the computer records in a database.

URBS – Recording, monitoring and evaluation of the architecture and urban contexts of the Mediterranean

Purpose: through the use of case studies, to employ a multidisciplinary approach to investigate the various aspects of the historical-archaeological problem of the creation and development of cities in the Mediterranean basin. The chronological range of the research is extensive, from the Late Bronze Age until the Roman period, encompassing all phases of urbanization in their complexity: from their design to the phenomena of continuity/discontinuity with previous patterns of settlement. The study will also be extended to all aspects of urban design (socio-political and religious), from the Greek polis at the outset to the later Roman city. The choice of certain important type-sites will permit the analysis of these phenomena in a broad geographical ambit, the physical limits of which are the entire Mediterranean basin.

O.R.I. (Offerta Ruralità Integrata) OF THE MEDITERRANEAN

Purpose: the Project proposal O.R.I. of the Mediterranean has the general objective, of regional interest, to bring about the creation of GALs(Gruppi di Azione Locale = Local Action Groups) which will take on functions and roles that will incentivize the organization of the relevant product/locality through integrated sector networks (all related to the integrated touristic product in question). It will also bring them to interact at the regional level, so as to compose and make available and integrated offering of the regional rural system, open to an enhanced trans-national cooperation.

Attention is directed to models of organization and of operation which incorporate social and territorial variables alongside strictly economic ones: the locality becomes the place of production of specific knowledge (contextual knowledge) and of mechanisms of social interaction (networks of interpersonal relationships, values, trust, reciprocity).

Historicimagesof landscape and agricultural food production in Lucania in the time of Frederick II

Purpose: to support and validate the presentation of local productions, when placed in the context of the historical evolution of the landscape and of productive traditions. The results constitute the basis for a subsequent broadening of the research, intended to identify the range of variety in 12th and 13th-century Lucania and to forge a material link with information drawn from sources on cultivation and diet at the time of Frederick II. Thus, the principal activites are are follows:

- creation of a specific and reasoned bibliography on the rural landscape and historic food production, including archival sources;

- creation of a database of both general and detailed information, by cultivated species and its use, with related studies to demonstrate the character of the rural landscape in the relevant historical period;

- preliminary research for the elaboration and composition of a history of viticulture, from antiquity until the time of Frederick II, combining the integrated study of written sources with research into the historical topography of the relevant lands.

Viggiano, the village and its ancient mills: rescue, presentation and restoration to working order

Purpose: the rescue of the historic productive character of the urban centre and the rural surroundings of the Comune of Viggiano, in order to construct a digital source of reference in support of local planning for the productive and touristic future of the locality. The principal elements are:

- study of the historic, cultural and environmental context through documentary, archival and bibliographic research, with particular focus on those elements which have made the greatest contribution towards defining the cultural and visualidentity of the area (e.g. the ancient mills in the countryside and the historic buildings in the town dedicated to craft and trade);

- identification and mapping of the sites of cultural, historic and architectural interest, through cataloguing and survey; this phase involves both the acquisition of data (structural, geographical, typological, anthropological etc.) through the development of appropriate recording forms, and recording by means of drawings, photographs and analyses; also the creation of a database which will facilitate the manipulation of the data by means of GIS (Geographic Information System) software.

Studies and activities dedicated to the understanding, presentation, exploitation and safeguarding of heritage of cultural interest in the Diocese of Tricarico

Purpose: this research, within the territory of the Diocese of Tricarico, is dedicated to the understanding, presentation, exploitation and safeguarding of heritage of cultural interest, in particular to the study of material held in the Diocesan Archive and of the art-historical treasures scattered throughout the diocese. The aim is to extract the fullest possible information on the cultural identity of the area, in the various phases, moments or periods which have characterised the life of the community, including its religious practices and the occasions marked by faith and devotion. These are related to the cycles of rural life, to agricultural practices determined by the changing seasons and the capacity to use natural resources.

The process of development will involve, amongst other elements, supervision of the display in the Diocesan Museum and the production of texts and animated videos to popularise and enhance the cultural heritage.

IT@CHA – Italian technologies for advanced applications in cultural heritage

Purpose: the study of the medieval troglodyte settlement of Casalrotto, near Mottola (TA). The investigations aim to reconstruct the ancient topography of the settlement, of its necropolis and of the ancient road system through interventions on site, such as a systematic survey augmented in some areas by geophysical investigations (ground-penetrating radar and magnetometry). In addition, a specific study is being dedicated to the frescoes of the rock-church of Sant’Angelo, on the western edge of the settlement: the pigments used have been analysed and a study of the deterioration of the frescoes has been undertaken.

Global history and archaeology of rural landscapes in Italy between Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Integrated systems of sources, methods and technologies for sustainable development

Purpose: the study of the historical dynamics of settlement between Late Antiquity and the Late Middle Ages in the territory of Otranto, from the perspective of historical ecology, in which information of traditional archaeological and historical type (society and economy, type and distribution of settlements, material culture etc.) come to be seen in a wider perspective of interaction with other components of the ecosystem (climate, soil, vegetation, water resources). The project aims to bring to full potential a database of settlement data through surveys on the ground and the use of GIS technology.
