Excavations and research

The strong-point and particular vehicle for promoting the activities of the Institute are its foreign archaeological missions. Already in progress for many years and now attached to IBAM through the researchers involved in them, they are:

teatro Hierapolis

a) Italian Archaeological Mission at Hierapolis in Phrygia (Turkey), directed by F. D'Andria, University of Salento. This now involves groups of researchers from the Lecce, Potenza and Catania offices: archaeologists, geologists, topographers, architects, ICT specialists, etc. who are carrying out studies and topographic surveys of the ancient city and its landscape, providing also the city's web-GIS project, virtual reconstructions and finally studies of archaeological artifacts, etc.

tempio Prinias

b) Italian Archaeological Mission in Prinias (Crete, Greece), directed by D. Palermo, University of Catania. IBAM has a research unit which has been active within the archaeological mission for a long time and researches have been conducted for over thirty years in close collaboration between the University of Catania and IBAM - CNR.

missione Peru

c) Italian Archaeological Mission in Peru, co-directed by N. Masini. An ideal place to test technologies of landscape interpretation through remote sensing, satellite imagery, geophysical prospecting and so on.

Durres project

In the last two years, IBAM has been investigating the setting up of a fourth archaeological mission abroad, in Albania (Durres), where the Department of Antiquities has already authorized D. Malfitana and other colleagues to carry out preliminary investigations (GPR) in the ancient city within a project of urban archaeology.
